How Unresolved Trauma Affects Your Body, Weight, and Confidence (and How to Heal)
By Wendy Jordan, certified wellness coach
Old pain does not always stay in the past. Sometimes it lives in the body as tension, fatigue, a habit you cannot shake, or a quiet voice that says you are not enough.
I want to be clear that I am a wellness coach, not a therapist. If you carry serious trauma, a licensed mental health professional is the right partner for that work. Coaching can sit alongside it.
How it can show up
- A body that stays on high alert and struggles to rest.
- Eating to soothe, numb or feel in control.
- Difficulty trusting your own choices.
- Pulling back from things you want because it feels unsafe to be seen.
None of this is a character flaw. These are patterns that once helped you cope.
Where healing can begin
- Notice without judging. Ask what a pattern is trying to protect.
- Build safety first, through sleep, steady meals and calming practices.
- Choose supportive people and, when needed, professional help.
- Take small, kind actions that rebuild trust with yourself.
- Explore gentle body-based and energy practices if they feel right to you.
Confidence returns slowly
As your body feels safer, confidence tends to grow. It grows through small proofs that you can keep promises to yourself. Be patient with your pace.
